Withheld Payroll Tax Tracker

This tracks the year over year growth in taxes withheld from paychecks, straight from the U.S. Treasury's Daily Treasury Statement. Each point compares the last 4 weeks of deposits to the same 4 weeks a year earlier. Withholding rises and falls with jobs and wages, so it's one of the most timely reads on labor income you can get.

Keep in mind this series combines federal income tax withholding with Social Security and Medicare (FICA) taxes. Changes to IRS withholding tables can move it for reasons that have nothing to do with the job market.
